Accomplishments of the Phoenicians
The Phoenicians achieved many things during their time. They were by far the best
shipbuilders and sailors of Mesopotamia. Some of their other accomplishments
included making the first see through glass, creating an alphabet the phoenician alphabet
reads right to left later adopted by the Greeks, and establishing many trade colonies along the
Mediterranean and northwestern Europe. They avoided violence by submitting to
foreign conquerors most of the time. However, the Phoenicians were also able to
defend some of their cities, usually Tyre, against invasion and even several years of
enemy siege. An example of this is their battle against the Assyrians in 725 B.C. This
was the first naval battle in history, which was won by the Phoenicians, who then withstood a
five year siege. The Phoenicians also made many mathematical and scientific
advancements; one mathematician who lived in Phoenicia was the famous Pythagoras
(the father of the Pythagorean Theorem). The Phoenicians clearly accomplished many
great things during their existence.
